Newcastle United suffered defeat at under-23 level as Reading ran out 2-1 winners against the Magpies.
A solid first-half showing from the Royals saw them head into the interval two goals to the good.
Thierry Nevers and Femi Azeez scored the goals which left the Magpies with a mountain to climb.
One man who did perform really well during this afternoon’s clash was young striker Stan Flaherty.
The 19-year-old scored Newcastle’s only goal of the afternoon, bagging his seventh strike of the season.
It wasn’t to be for the under-23 ranks earlier today but in Flaherty the club looks to have another player ready in waiting.
The talented teenager has been in fine form for the Magpies and will surely be knocking on Steve Bruce’s door.
With Callum Wilson currently out injured, there are some fans who would love to see him handed a chance.
Andy Carroll and Dwight Gayle are the two strikers currently in Bruce’s squad but both are struggling.
The experienced duo are badly out of form and the first-team boss might dip into his youth ranks in the coming weeks.
Following Flaherty’s showing this afternoon, supporters took to Twitter to rave about his efforts despite the defeat.
