Joelinton was once again the star for Newcastle United in the defeat to Manchester City.

The Brazilian started in a three-man midfield for the second game in a row, tasked with going toe-to-toe with some of the best midfielders in the Premier League.

And he certainly did that.

For a long time, it was difficult to watch Joelinton in a Newcastle shirt. Now he’s looking more and more at home each passing game.

The 25-year-old has been revitalised by Eddie Howe, who has deployed him in some unusual roles.

But the decision to play him as a deeper midfielder has been inspired, especially given the calibre of opponents. Joelinton gave us a physical presence in the middle, and continues to do his best Mo Diame impression when reclaiming possession.

The £40million man had a great battle with Manchester City’s Rodri, one of the top holding midfielder’s in the Premier League. But Joelinton outmuscled him on multiple occasions, particularly in the first half.

While the result was disappointing, it was hard not to be impressed with Joelinton against the champions. His performances in recent weeks have been a breath of fresh air.

He’s winning over Toon fans, who were often very frustrated with the club record signing. But now the Gallowgate chant his name, in awe of a man who has benefitted hugely from the change of manager.

There’s more to come from Joelinton, and hopefully he carries on his good form going into the next few games.

Toon fans didn’t have a lot to celebrate yesterday, but the performance of our number seven certainly delighted supporters.
