While Newcastle saw Jeff Hendrick sent off for two yellows, Southampton were very lucky to end the game with 11 men.
With the Magpies on the break despite being a man down, Miguel Almiron was taken out on the edge of the Saints box.
Jan Bednarek clearly wiped out the Paraguayan, and got a yellow card for his troubles.

But Almiron was going to be through on goal, which should have resulted in a straight red card.
It was clearly denying a goalscoring opportunity, while Bednarek made no attempt to play the ball.
VAR did look at the incident, but Craig Pawson’s initial decision stood.

The Magpies went down to nine men, although it should have been 10 a side.
Pawson’s inability to send Bednarek off could have cost Newcastle, who spent the rest of the game defending for their lives.
