Thank goodness Matt Ritchie knows how to take a penalty.

The Scotland international was cool as ice from 12 yards, despite Ederson’s best efforts to pile the pressure on him.

Ritchie slammed the penalty underneath the Brazilian stopper to hand Newcastle an incredible victory on an emotionally draining day for Toon fans.

Just like he was in the Championship so many times, Ritchie was the match winner for the Magpies. But even with the penalty, it was a fantastic performance from the former Bournemouth man.

The 29-year-old was excellent in his left wing-back role, staying disciplined up against a tricky customer in Raheem Sterling.

Ritchie’s commitment can never be questioned

Ever since he arrived ahead of our Championship campaign, Ritchie has been as committed as they come. Every game he gives 100% and his energy is infectious. He gets the best out of players around him and sets the tone.

He may not be the quickest or the most gifted technically, but Newcastle are a worse side without him.

Who knows where we’d be if had been sold in the summer. But fortunately he stayed and, just like last year, secured a famous win over a team from Manchester.

That poor corner flag though…
