Ciaran Clark came in from the cold to captain and score the winner as Newcastle beat Burnley.

The Republic of Ireland international replaced Paul Dummett in the starting XI, forcing a change of formation.

The 29-year-old appeared as the left centre-back, but also played a key role at the other end of the pitch.

He bagged his second of the season with a glancing header that eventually proved to be the difference between the sides.

Newcastle fans react to Clark’s performance

Fans were surprised to see Clark’s name when the starting XI was announced, but the defender didn’t let anyone down.

While he was slightly at fault for Sam Vokes’ goal, it was probably the only mistake he made all night. The former Villa man led by example, performing brilliantly alongside Federico Fernandez and Fabian Schar.

His first goal of the season was a meaningless consolation strike against Arsenal, but this header made it maximum points from the past three games.

Newcastle have not suffered during Jamaal Lascelles’ injury. In fact, it’s proved how much depth the Magpies have at centre-back.

Clark might be out-of-favour when Rafa Benitez has a full strength squad, but he can still be a key figure when called upon. And he’s just as prolific as our strikers!
