Going to Liverpool is always tough, but Newcastle’s job has got much harder with the injury to Sean Longstaff.

Ahead of the game, Steve Bruce confirmed that the young midfielder will miss the trip to Anfield because of a ‘freak’ ankle injury. It’s a huge blow for the Magpies, as Longstaff’s energy alongside Isaac Hayden would’ve been key to neutralising Liverpool’s flowing attack.

But alas, we’ll be without the academy graduate, presenting someone else with an opportunity. But who should Bruce turn to?

The most likely option is Jonjo Shelvey. The former Liverpool midfielder is one of the most gifted members of Bruce’s squad, but lost his place after the Norwich defeat.

Shelvey has the ability to open up the Reds’ defence, but how many opportunities will he get to do that? We’re going to spend most of the game defending, meaning Hayden will need a disciplined partner alongside him. On the face of it, Shelvey doesn’t seem fit for purpose.

The other options are Ki Sung-Yueng and Matty Longstaff. The former would be a sensible choice as he’s a bit more trustworthy than Shelvey, but still won’t fill fans with confidence.

Calling upon Longstaff jr would be a massive risk by Bruce, and one I can’t see him taking.

It’s certainly not an easy decision, and the Toon Army have given their view on the situation.
