Newcastle United played out a 1-1 draw with Manchester United in the Premier League tonight in what was, in the end, a desperately unlucky result.
Allan Saint-Maximin gave the hosts the lead in the first-half. But Edinson Cavani equalised for the Red Devils with around 20 minutes to go to ensure the spoils were shared.
Alan Shearer called on the players to ‘give us something’ ahead of kick-off.
And that is exactly what they did.
It was a superb display from Newcastle, with every single player putting in the hard graft.
The players owed the supporters a performance for their brilliant support during what’s been a tough season.
And that’s exactly what they gave.
But despite their brilliance, Newcastle just couldn’t get over the line.
Saint-Maximin had a number of other chances in addition to the one he converted in the first-half. Including one from point-blank range that he somehow fluffed.
Jacob Murphy also hit the post, and David De Gea denied Miguel Almiron with a truly world-class save.
Saint-Maximin went off injured, just as Callum Wilson did at the end of the first-half – which is hugely concerning for Newcastle.
Cavani’s goal came out nothing, and that then led to some late pressure from the visitors.
Thankfully there was to be no winner for the Red Devils – that truly would have been an injustice.

He worked his socks off alongside Jonjo Shelvey and Sean Longstaff.
It is brilliant to see him finally flourishing consistently in a Newcastle shirt. His form is going to be absolutely crucial in Newcastle’s bid for Premier League survival this season.
