Newcastle United fans have been reacting to the performance of Andy Carroll against Arsenal in the FA Cup last night.
The Magpies were beaten 2-0 by the Gunners, who needed extra-time at the Emirates Stadium.
A stubborn Newcastle defence was eventually breached by Emile Smith Rowe who finished well in to the corner, before Kieran Tierney crossed for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to put the game to bed.
The results means Arsenal enter the fourth round and still have hope of winning the competition for a 15th time, and Newcastle’s focus now becomes the Premier League.
The outcome of the game could have been so different if Carroll had been more clinical.
The 32-year-old had a couple of glorious chances but was lacking that cutting edge at the decisive moments.
Despite him missing some chances, Carroll actually came in for quite a bit of praise from supporters on social media.
The £75,000-a-week former West Ham United man (Spotrac) was a real menace for the Magpies, and made life extremely uncomfortable for David Luiz and Pablo Mari.
His showing for the 120 minutes was definitely encouraging and could well see the return of a Wilson-Carroll partnership going forwards.
Of course the missed opportunities left a bitter taste, but some were keen to praise Carroll for his contributions:
Have to agree with you here. The performance wasn’t bad. Anderson looks promising & deserves to be involved more. Carroll put a shift in and Hayden very assured at the back. We need @asaintmaximin back, where is he?? #nufc https://t.co/am6uA8RABq

Those Carroll sitters are still haunting me like but on the plus side he looked really good last night and the fittest he’s looked in a long time. #NUFC

If Carroll can play for almost 2 hours then we really need him to be starting alongside Wilson instead of Joelinton

• Dubravka v.good on his return
• Anderson looked confident & not out of place at all.
• Carroll miles better…but poor finishing costly.
• Clark brilliant before late error.
• Hayden proving once again he’s a capable CB.
• Ritchie’s crossing…🤔🤷🏼♂️

MOTM… even with those misses. They have to get the Carroll/ Wilson partnership working. Time for Joelinton to make a proper acquaintance with the subs bench. #nufc

Gutted we didnt win today and beat arsenal. I think we were the better side. Carroll was a handful. Anderson looks a future star, I’d like to see him play more #nufc

Andy Carroll was our best player tonight. What a performance from him but SURELY it’d make sense playing him alongside Wilson/Gayle. #NUFC

One goal in eight hours of football for #nufc. Huge opportunity missed tonight against a poor #Arsenal side, gutted Carroll missed those chances as his effort throughout was brilliant. Give Anderson another chance on Tuesday, very tidy on the ball!
