Newcastle are into the top half, and they have Andy Carroll to thank.
After starting on Thursday night against Sheffield United, the big man dropped back to the bench when Southampton came to town. However, Joelinton once again struggled, forcing Steve Bruce to turn to Carroll.
And the 30-year-old made a huge difference, once again giving both his teammates and the fans a massive lift. He came on with just over 30 minutes to go, and it didn’t take him long to change the game.
A free-kick sent the summer signing towards the corner flag, who dug out a fantastic cross back into the area. Jonjo Shelvey was there to find the net, combing once again with Carroll to score his fifth of the season and third in three games. It was a wicked delivery from the striker, putting it exactly where he’d want it himself.
Newcastle were struggling to pick up second balls and impose themselves with Joelinton up top, but Carroll ensured we had a focal point. Carroll’s arrival, combined with Allan Saint-Maximin playing through the middle, provided the platform for another Newcastle win.
The Magpies have had a brilliant week, and Carroll has played a massive part in that.
Game changing performance from Carroll praised by Newcastle fans
What a come back and yes I’m saying it “Shelvey was outstanding” and about bloody time so yes I love him again 🤣🤣🤣 but for me the game changer was Andy Carroll he was absolutely magnificent from defence to attack. What performance 👏👏 Tek-a-boo my son tek-a-boo ⚫️⚪️⚫️⚪️

Tell you what. Carroll was the difference today. Amazing how well we play with 11 men rather than 10 and a half. Joelinton needs to take a long hard look at himself. £40m and he’s sauntering around or on the floor. #NUFC #NEWSOU

Andy Carroll changed the game for me today. Wasn’t a pretty win but a win is a win. #nufc

Got away with one today, but a good result and a huge three points
Carroll was immense and changed things (he and Shelvey combine well) but this is twice in a few weeks we’ve come from behind to win. Mental steel not seen for years – a huge positive #NUFC

Woeful today until introduction of Carroll who was immense
Still, its always a good sign to win when playing badly
AC not immense due to managerial tactics just his own will to win and give everything for the shirt – superb display from him all over the pitch#nufc

Carroll was superb today. Man of the match. That cross for the goal was perfect. He and Shelvey had a ‘Freaky Friday’ body swap moment with each other for that goal 😂 #nufc
