Matt Ritchie owes Allan Saint-Maximin one.

Despite playing against 10 men and winning a penalty, it took Newcastle until the 79th minute to end their Premier League goal drought.

Dwight Gayle passed up multiple opportunities in the first half, but Ritchie had the easiest of the lot.

After a lengthy delay, VAR handed Newcastle a chance from the spot after a handball by Sofiane Boufal.

Ritchie stepped up, but his spot kick was well saved by Alex McCarthy.

It was our first penalty of the season, and Ritchie was the man trusted with tucking it away. But just like his last penalty, it was saved.

But some fans have actually leapt to the defence of the winger, claiming that it was actually a fantastic save by the Saints stopper.

McCarthy did well to keep it out, but it was worryingly predictable from Ritchie. He always goes low and hard to the bottom right corner.

While some fans believe he isn’t to blame, it seems like time we have a new penalty taker.

Then again, who knows when we’ll get another…
