Newcastle United held Liverpool to a 0-0 draw at St. James’ Park last night to gain an unlikely point against the Premier League champions.

The Magpies put in a spirited performance against the Reds, with goalkeeper Karl Darlow making a string of great saves to deny the visitors.

In the first-half Callum Wilson and Ciaran Clark were both denied by Alisson.

But Liverpool cranked up the pressure in the second half, and it required a monumental defensive effort from the hosts.

Speaking after the game, Steve Bruce said (BBC Sport): “We knew we let everyone down in a big cup tie. We blew it.

“We have to take the criticism that comes our way and accept it but I hope the supporters who watched this game today could really enjoy the performance.”
