Miguel Almiron was one of many Newcastle players to receive criticism in the past week.
The Paraguayan had really struggled in his new role, being asked to play up top with record signing Joelinton. But Almiron didn’t look comfortable, forcing Steve Bruce to change things up against Tottenham.
The 25-year-old started on the right of a defensive front three, with Bruce deploying the same system that served Rafa Benitez so well last season.
And Almiron looked so much more comfortable. He was able to run with the ball from deep, get his head up and find a pass. He very nearly got his first goal for the club, as his strike in the second half was narrowly deflected over.
However, his defensive work was what really caught the eye against Tottenham.
Tottenham enjoyed a lot of possession, with their fullbacks basically playing as wingers. Danny Rose is very comfortable in that role, but Almiron ensured he didn’t have a lot of joy down the left.
He tracked pretty much every run the Tottenham defender made, completing block after block. This was a massive plus for Newcastle, as Emil Krafth really needed support out there after a shocking debut against Norwich. And Almiron helped him all afternoon.
He still hasn’t got that elusive goal or assist, but fans absolutely loved his performance against Tottenham.
