Newcastle United Under-23s ended their Papa John’s Trophy campaign with a 6-3 thrashing at the hands of Mansfield Town. In Dylan Stephenson, however, the Magpies look to have a star emerging through the ranks.

It was a tough night for the young Newcastle team. It means the youngsters have been defeated in each of their three EFL Trophy games, although they should learn from the experience.

Stephenson was like a man possessed last night. He scored one and set up another of Newcastle’s goals, despite the group of talented players slipping to a heavy defeat.

Things started well for the Magpies. Stephenson fired Newcastle ahead after five minutes before Danny Johnson restored parity.

Joe White then edged Newcastle back in front on the night. It wasn’t to be though and a goal in first-half stoppage time seemed to knock the stuffing out of the young guns.

Mansfield were rampant in the second half and put Newcastle to the sword. Michael Ndweni scored a final Magpies goal late on to reduce the deficit somewhat.

The campaign has been poor in the way of results but the under-23 outfit will now hope to take the experience of playing against men into their league season.

The youngster is enjoying a fine campaign. In the Premier League 2 campaign he’s found the net eight times and registered one assist.

He typically operates as a centre-forward but has also played on the right-hand side on one occasion this season.

Last night he was utilised in a wide role and clearly, he’s happy to do a job for the team wherever he’s called upon.

Newcastle fans think the 18-year-old is a star of the future and they hope that Eddie Howe is monitoring his progress for the first-team.
