Gareth Southgate, what were you thinking?
The England manager was at St James’ Park on Saturday, watching Newcastle and Burnley play out a dismal 0-0 draw.
After about 10 minutes, he probably wondered why he’d even bothered.

The game was far from entertaining. There were limited chances at both ends, with Martin Dubravka and Nick Pope enjoying relatively quiet afternoons.
So who was Southgate there to watch?
Newcastle had five Englishman in their lineup, but Danny Rose and Jonjo Shelvey are the only ones who have represented their country.
Shelvey hasn’t had a chance in an England shirt for a long time, but Rose actually went to the World Cup in Russia.
However, the left-back was pretty poor. He’s really struggling to recapture his form after his loan move from Tottenham.

Burnley actually had eight English players in their starting XI, and it’s more likely that Southgate was there to watch some of Sean Dyche’s men.
If the Three Lions boss picks any of yesterday’s players for the Euros based on that game, England have got no chance.
