It’s not often you see Paul Dummett score for Newcastle United. But that’s exactly what he did on Friday night.

The defender put the Magpies in control against Leicester, doubling the lead after 34 minutes.

It was a wonderful header. Matt Ritchie delivered a wicked corner towards the back post, and Dummett rose higher than Wesley Fofana to power home a header. It was like prime Alan Shearer.

But it wasn’t a Newcastle number nine – it was their number three scoring his first goal of the season.

In fact, it was his first goal since 2016. The last time Dummett scored was in the 3-3 draw with Manchester United back when Steve McClaren was manager.

That was a dramatic late equaliser from Dummett, although it did take a huge deflection.

Five years later and Dummett has finally scored again.

It was an important goal, and one that would have caused a huge roar had fans been in attendance.

Dummett is an unsung hero at Newcastle. He does the basics, and he does them well. He is an out-and-out defender who wears his heart on his sleeve.

He isn’t in the team to score goals. He’s in it to stop it going in the net at the other end.

His hard work was rewarded on Friday night, as he finally ended his goal drought.

Toon fans are made up for the local lad, who played an important role in a big win for the Magpies.
