Newcastle United have won again in the Premier League, beating Southampton 2-1 at St. Mary’s Stadium.

The club came from behind to win on the south coast, with Chris Wood and Bruno Guimaraes both scoring their first goals for the club.

Stuart Armstrong gave the Saints the lead on 25 minutes. But Wood would finally break his duck by scoring a great header from a Jonjo Shelvey cross.

The former Burnley star is finally off the mark on his eighth appearance for the club, and hopefully he can now go on a run.

In the second-half, Newcastle took the lead courtesy of a truly sublime goal by Bruno Guimaraes, who was making his first start for the club in place of the injured Joelinton.

Matt Targett sent in a corner, and Dan Burn headed it back across goal with the Brazilian meeting it with a backheel volley.

It was an audacious piece of skill from Bruno, who has now truly announced himself at the club having had to be patient since his arrival.

It is a huge result for Newcastle, and also a very satisfactory one given the comments made by Ralph Hasenhuttl previously.

The Saints boss had suggested that signings made by Newcastle shouldn’t be allowed to play, after this game had to be rescheduled because of Covid cases within Newcastle’s squad.

After the game, Newcastle’s official Twitter account put out a potentially very cheeky tweet.

The post is of a few stills from the game, along with the caption: ‘Four of our January signings making a HUGE impact at St Mary’s!’ along with a smiley face emoji.

Maybe it’s innocent, but hopefully it isn’t.
