Despite an FA Cup horror show on Saturday, the main topic of conversation at Newcastle this week has been transfers.
With the January window open, the Magpies are on the look out for reinforcements, most notably a striker. A plethora of players have been linked with a move to St James’ Park – some good, some bad and some laughable.
But the more immediate issue is the game against Wolves on Saturday. Steve Bruce desperately needs a reaction from his players. The second half against Rochdale was totally unacceptable – we were lucky to get out of there with a draw.
While the first half was positive, our failures in front of goal stopped us from killing the game off. We let Rochdale back into the tie, with a 40-year-old striker grabbing the equaliser.
The players, especially Joelinton, were booed off. There were cries of ‘you’re not fit to wear the shirt’.
Wolves will be a tough game on Saturday. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are one of the best outside of the traditional ‘top six’, and have only gotten better since the draw at St James’ Park in October.
It isn’t a must win game. Wolves are a strong side on the up. But that doesn’t mean the players aren’t capable of getting a result.
There needs to be a massive improvement. Newcastle have been woeful in recent weeks, showing no signs of stopping the rot.
With a lot of players set to return to fitness, Bruce can’t hide behind the injury crisis. After the crushing 5-0 defeat to Leicester earlier in the season, Bruce got a response from his players. He needs a similar response on Saturday.
