Newcastle United take on Manchester City this weekend, and Michail Antonio thinks the Magpies can hurt them if they follow his advice.
Eddie Howe’s side are set to take on the champions on Sunday, as they prepare to welcome Pep Guardiola’s team of superstars to St James’ Park.
Both teams have started the new season brightly, with neither conceding a Premier League goal. Something might have to give on Sunday, as Nick Pope and Ederson put their perfect records on the line.
Newcastle have an unenviable task. Man City are a footballing juggernaut that is so difficult to stop. They’ve got better over the summer too, bringing in Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund.
The Magpies are going to have to play really well to get anything out of the game, but West Ham forward Antonio believes they might have a chance.
Antonio on Newcastle vs West Ham
The Hammers striker has appeared on the latest episode of the Footballer’s Football Podcast alongside Newcastle’s Callum Wilson.
Antonio’s side have already face Man City this season, losing 2-0 on the opening weekend. And the 32-year-old has given Newcastle some tips that could help them against Guardiola’s men.
“I’m going to give you a pointer,” Antonio said.
“It didn’t help for us, but it might help for you. They are not match fit yet. They’ve not played many games. They’ve come into the games not really match fit but their quality gets them out of it.
“If you guys can, which isn’t going to be easy, if you guys can press them, get them to run around then hopefully you’ll get them to blow up.”
Easier said than done
Firstly, fair play to Antonio for giving Newcastle some pointers on how to tackle the challenge that City will present on Sunday. Wilson returned the favour, giving West Ham some tips on how to get at Brighton.
But while Antonio’s idea sounds good on paper, it is easier said than done. If City can get control of possession, they will suck the energy out of you with their relentless passing.
The one advantage we do have is that we are at home. The crowd should be able to give the Newcastle players a boost which will help them get after City at the right moments. It will simply be a case of capitalising when openings come our way.
Playing the champions so early is probably a good thing, especially after the start we’ve had. It’s effectively a free hit for Eddie Howe and co.
If we can get at City and ‘get them to run’ like Antonio says, just maybe we can get something out of the game.
