Newcastle United picked up their third win in a row in the Premier League this afternoon seeing off Burnley 2-0.

It was one of those games where the scoreline flattered the losing side somewhat, although Burnley did have their chances.

However it was Newcastle who dominated and should have had several goals but it just seemed to be one of those games. Every time the ball cannoned loose in a dangerous area it seemed to spin out of the way of a Newcastle player into relative safety.

Kieran Trippier’s crossing was excellent for Newcastle today

Alexander Isak missed an early chance that on any normal day he would bury, Elliot Anderson was unlucky on several occasions but no more so than when his diving header was saved by James Trafford and then spun goalward only to be cleared off the line.

One man who kept plugging away for Newcastle, doing all he could to add to the tally was Kieran Trippier. He put in so many crosses into very dangerous areas that just didn’t quite find their mark.

The £12million man still drew plenty of praise from Michael Bridges who was on commentary, who said: “Every time Trippier plays a cross he has me flabbergasted.”

West Ham’s win kept them above Newcastle in the PL this week

Trippier and Anthony Gordon had the beating of the Burnley full-backs, but whatever magic they had protecting their goal was ultimately too strong and Newcastle had to make do with just the two goals.

A world class effort from Miguel Almiron in the first half and an Alexander Isak penalty in the second after Anthony Gordon was felled in the box.

The win keeps Newcastle in the hunt for the top six but due to a West Ham win, they don’t actually gain any places in the league. However, West Ham are Newcastle’s next league opponents so they could leapfrog the Hammers with a win next week.
