Matt Targett excels again: Newcastle player ratings vs Chelsea

Add as preferred source on Google

While their unbeaten run came to an end, Newcastle United played brilliantly against Chelsea.

The Magpies lost 1-0 at Stamford Bridge, but should be immensely proud of their performance. Eddie Howe’s side deserved a point, but key decisions from the referee and VAR didn’t go their way.

There were some excellent performance in black and white once again, and here are our player ratings.

Martin Dubravka – 7/10

The Newcastle United keeper was rarely tested against Chelsea. He denied Kai Havertz from a header, but could do nothing to stop the winner.

Javi Manquillo – 7/10

A steady return to the starting XI for Javi Manquillo – his first since the 1-0 win over Aston Villa. The Spaniard did well down the right, providing a bit more energy compared to Emil Krafth.

Jamaal Lascelles – 7/10

The captain returned to the team as Eddie Howe decided to deploy a back five at Stamford Bridge. Lascelles performed well, but was sometimes sloppy in possession.

Fabian Schar – 8/10

The Switzerland international was once again brilliant at the back. He got his head on everything, and almost put Newcastle in front. However, his tame header was easily saved by Edouard Mendy.

Dan Burn – 8/10

The local lad was involved in two of the big moments against Chelsea. He was the victim of a brutal elbow from Kai Havertz, then momentarily switched off as the German grabbed the winner. But it was another exceptional performance from Burn, who continues to thrive at his new club.

Matt Targett – 8/10

Another typical Matt Targett performance. He was solid defensively, and actually offered a lot going forwards. His delivery from set pieces was brilliant, and almost got us the goal we craved.

Sean Longstaff – 7/10

It was Longstaff’s first start since the 1-1 draw with Watford, and it took him a while to get going. But he was impressive once he grew into the game, snapping into tackles and battling for possession.

Bruno Guimaraes – 7/10

Another good showing from Bruno, who completed his first 90 minutes in a Newcastle shirt. He did well up against Jorginho and N’Golo Kante, and was once again a calming presence on the ball.

Miguel Almiron – 5/10

Miguel Almiron finally got a chance in a Toon shirt, but didn’t really take it. He nearly scored a stunner before half time, but was denied by a diving Mendy. The Paraguayan struggled to get on the ball, and did little with it when he did. His pressing was commendable though.

Jacob Murphy – 6/10

An improved showing from Jacob Murphy, who should have been awarded a penalty in the second half. That was his most impressive moment, and he has every right to be aggrieved.

Chris Wood – 5/10

After scoring his first Toon goal against Southampton, Chris Wood was unable to add to his tally against Chelsea. He worked incredibly hard once again, but had no joy in front of goal. He barely got a sniff, and often played too deep to impact proceedings.
