Despite going ahead in the first half and Liverpool being down to ten men, Newcastle United ultimately lost by a 2-1 scoreline on Sunday.
Newcastle United produced a fantastic first half performance against Liverpool at St James’ Park. Anthony Gordon’s goal and Virgil van Dijk’s red card meant that the Magpies were in a brilliant position at the break. Eddie Howe will have just wanted more of the same for the second 45 minutes.
However, Liverpool were able to stay in the game, absorb pressure, and produce a remarkable turnaround in a grandstand finish. Substitute Darwin Nunez scored a brace in the final ten minutes to condemn Howe and his team to a heartbreaking defeat.
Howe will question some of the decisions he made during the match. Removing Sandro Tonali and Joelinton meant that Newcastle lost a vital degree of control in the middle of the park.
Howe gives his verdict on defeat
Speaking to Sky Sports (27/08/2023 at 19:28) after the match, Howe discussed the game, saying, “we needed the second goal…we had the chances, though, and that’s the thing that we’re frustrated with…there will be a lot of emotion.”
Newcastle now need to channel that emotion properly, and grow and learn from this experience.
There were certainly positives to take from this match for the Magpies. Tonali shone once again, and Gordon produced the kind of performance that the St James’ Park faithful have been waiting for since his arrival from Everton in January.
However, the way Newcastle buckled in the final stages will be a cause for concern. The lack of control and composure suggested that this side still have a lot to learn about competing with the best from a position of expectation.
All in all, this chastening defeat will stand Newcastle in good stead in future match situations. Howe just needs to make sure that the right lessons about game management are learned by his squad and that heads don’t drop in the dressing room on Tyneside.
