Kieran Trippier has admitted that Newcastle had to be patient against Bournemouth, as their opposition did their best to slow the game and frustrate the Magpies.
It was a narrow win but also a comfortable win on Tuesday night in the Carabao Cup. Eddie Howe won 1-0 against his former side, with the only goal coming courtesy of an Adam Smith own goal.
Newcastle were made to work for the victory, with Gary O’Neil’s side doing exactly what they did the last time they came to St James’ Park. They sat deep and defended their box, and took every chance they could to disrupt Newcastle’s rhythm.
It worked back in September, with Bournemouth securing a point. However, it wasn’t as successful this time, as the Magpies advanced to the quarter finals of the competition.
Howe’s side were forced to take their time and wait for their opportunity, and now Trippier has spoke out about Bournemouth’s antics on Tuesday night.
Trippier quizzed on Bournemouth’s tactics vs Newcastle
After the game, Trippier spoke to NUFC TV. He was asked about Newcastle dominating possession against Bournemouth.
“It’s one of those where we had to be patient in possession,” Trippier said.
“Teams are going to come here now and try to frustrate us as a team because we’re doing well and deserve that respect now.
“Teams are going to come and sit in a low block and try to kill time but we’ve just got to be mentally prepared for that and be patient.”
Trippier was then asked how similar the game was to the Premier League clash with Bournemouth earlier in the season.
“Yeah, because the first five minutes the keeper goes down last time. Then in the space of 20 minutes they went down five times.
“But it’s game management, I understand it. I’ve done it myself sometimes when I was at Atletico Madrid but this is football. We have to be prepared for that because we’re going to get more of it.”
Trippier expects Newcastle to experience more timewasting
Particularly in the first half, Bournemouth did their best to disrupt the game. Little fouls were plentiful, while the physio was on and off the pitch to tend to their injuries. He probably got through more running than some of the Bournemouth players.
But it is a price Newcastle must pay if they want to be successful. As Trippier says, it is a sign of respect because of how good we have become this season. Teams believe that is the way to stop us.
It was incredibly annoying early on, and halted Newcastle making a fast start on their return to competitive action. That was exactly what Bournemouth wanted, and they got it.
But Trippier was pretty open in his response. Yes, it is annoying. But it is something we must deal with. And he is no stranger to timewasting, admitting that he did it himself when he was at Atletico Madrid.
However, he failed to mention doing it for Newcastle on occasions. We are certainly no saints when it comes to the dark arts of football, and have killed time during plenty of games this season as we protect a lead.
But we didn’t have to do it on Tuesday night, and were able to find a way past a Bournemouth side that were intent on sitting deep and playing for time.
