Alan Shearer has blasted one Newcastle United player for making a huge error in the game against Blackburn.
Newcastle just edged past Blackburn after a 4-3 win in the penalty shootout but the result could easily have gone the other way with the Geordies once again looking off of their game.
Speaking on punditry for the BBC, Shearer slammed Jamaal Lascelles for making a very poor mistake in the final 10 minutes which ultimately led to Blackburn’s equalising goal.
Newcastle almost embarrassed at Blackburn
Newcastle had been poor all night but found the lead through Anthony Gordon and just needed to see the game out to secure their place in the quarter final of the FA Cup.
However, with the clock ticking down, Newcastle failed to deal with a simple throw-in down the line thanks to a Lascelles error and Sammie Szmodics had a tap-in at the back post to take the game to extra time.
It’s been the story of the season for Newcastle so far with so many defensive errors costing them in big games, and once again they paid the price for being too lazy at the back.
After full-time, Shearer was irate with what Lascelles had done to concede the equalising goal, adding that it has just summed Newcastle’s season up.
“It cannot be allowed to happen that, Lascelles. Just stop that anyway. It’s just such a basic error. It just sums Newcastle up, too many errors.”

Newcastle desperately need to find their feet
It feels like it’s been months of the media and fans claiming that Newcastle really need to get back to their best form if they are to have anything to show for this season.
But now it’s really getting to the business end of things and the Magpies cannot afford anymore underwhelming performances, though it doesn’t look to be getting much better after a disappointing display against Blackburn.
It should have been a relatively straightforward game against Championship opposition who are battling relegation, but Newcastle actually looked the inferior side and lacked that intensity that made them such a good team last year.
Now, attention will turn to Wolves in the league on Saturday which is another huge game for Eddie Howe’s long-term future at the club and Newcastle’s European dreams.
