With Newcastle down to the bare bones, Isaac Hayden was forced to play out of position against Wolves.

There was confusion when Steve Bruce’s team was announced, as it wasn’t clear who would be playing right wing-back.

But when the players emerged for kick off, it became apparent that Mr Reliable Isaac Hayden was the man tasked with operating on the right of defence. This came after he played centre-back last week at Rochdale.

While the FA Cup draw was a low for everyone involved, Hayden really excelled in his makeshift role this week. He was rarely troubled, despite being up against the pacey Pedro Neto.

The few times he was able to get forward, Hayden produced some wicked crosses into the box which sadly weren’t headed home.

While he belongs in centre midfield, it’s great to see him get the job done in an unfamiliar position. Hayden is a class act and as professional as they come.

And to think he seemed certain to leave last summer…
