With Newcastle down to the bare bones, Isaac Hayden was forced to play out of position against Wolves.
There was confusion when Steve Bruce’s team was announced, as it wasn’t clear who would be playing right wing-back.
But when the players emerged for kick off, it became apparent that Mr Reliable Isaac Hayden was the man tasked with operating on the right of defence. This came after he played centre-back last week at Rochdale.
While the FA Cup draw was a low for everyone involved, Hayden really excelled in his makeshift role this week. He was rarely troubled, despite being up against the pacey Pedro Neto.
The few times he was able to get forward, Hayden produced some wicked crosses into the box which sadly weren’t headed home.
While he belongs in centre midfield, it’s great to see him get the job done in an unfamiliar position. Hayden is a class act and as professional as they come.
And to think he seemed certain to leave last summer…
Hayden gets top marks in new role
Isaac Hayden was excellent today. Played out of position but you wouldn’t have thought it. Won’t be long before a 15-20m pound bid comes in for him. #nufc

Back 3 superb today. Hayden at RWB the ultimate pro. Matty Longstaff worked his arse off and Almiron oozing confidence as seen with the finish. Great point all round. ⚪️⚫️❤️ #NUFC

Far from a pretty performance but a great point in the circumstances. Thought Almiron was MOTM, brilliantly taken goal but also our only real outlet & was tireless defensively too. Hayden did well out of position at RWB & Dubravka made some unreal stops as per 👏🏻

I only wish that when he did make a mistake… It woukdnt be so critical.
That said… Outstanding today.
Pluses; Dubravka, Matty, Almiron and Hayden who I thought did really well at RWB
Minuses: Jethro (Traore ate him alive) and Atsu (what does he do well?)
