Gayle's Palace performance puts even more pressure on Slimani

Dwight Gayle was unable to take his chance against Crystal Palace, putting in yet another ineffective performance.

Joselu was under fire after his failures against Burnley cost the Magpies, but Gayle’s performance versus Palace was arguably even worse.

The Newcastle number nine was non existent for most of the game, failing to be a focal point of the attack and hold the ball up. While Joselu is poor in front of goal, his all round play helps Newcastle, whereas Gayle might as well not be on the pitch.

Newcastle need goals, meaning that Joselu is not the man Rafa Benitez needs, therefore all of the pressure is on Islam Slimani to hit the ground running and perform.

Gayle has looked disinterested this season and clearly cannot play in the Premier League as a lone striker. Joselu can be a lone striker, but needs more quality around him to put the ball in the back of the net; something Newcastle do not have.

Goals are what will keep Newcastle in the Premier League and it looks like Slimani is the only man capable of getting them.

The Algerian missed out on the trip to Selhurst Park, but Benitez and fans will be praying he is fit enough to start next week when Newcastle host Manchester United at St James’ Park.

Gayle was key to promotion with his goals but has not been able to cut it at Premier League level, and his performance at Palace has to be the final nail in the coffin for the £10 million man.

No pressure, Slimani…
