Elliot Anderson got his pre-season off to a fantastic start at Gateshead yesterday, scoring one and providing one in Newcastle United’s 2-3 win.
To some it may not count, but after having a goal bizarrely chalked off last season against Nottingham Forest, you try telling Elliot Anderson that he’s still yet to score a senior goal for Newcastle.
After being fed the ball from Allan Saint-Maximin, Elliot Anderson brought the ball under control and stayed strong in the wake of some strong challenges before firing the ball home to bag his first senior goal.
Anderson and Saint-Maximin linked up brilliantly against Gateshead
Anderson went on to return the favour for Allan Saint-Maximin squaring the ball for the Frenchman to slot home Newcastle’s equaliser before two academy lads teamed up for the best goal of the lot as Lewis Miley pinged a lovely ball into the box for Jay Turner-Cooke to volley home.

After the game NUFC TV spoke to Anderson and asked him what it was like playing alongside Saint-Maximin in the light of them both scoring and assisting each other.
“It’s good to play with Allan, said Anderson. “He’s got huge talent and you never really know what he’s going to do but it’s great to play with him and assist him.”
The man Gary Neville once called ‘breathtaking‘, Allan Saint-Maximin looked like he was having fun on the pitch, he was full of running and was all over the pitch, and with the ball at his feet he gave the Newcastle fans plenty to cheer about. If there was some better finishing from his teammates he could have come away with a bundle of assists.
Anderson knows he has work to do to keep his place in the match-day squad
Anderson spoke of his own future in the side after it was acknowledged that he’s come back to training in fantastic shape, it seems Anderson knows he’s got work to do to break into the Newcastle first-team and cement his place.

Speaking about the importance of his breakthrough season versus the upcoming campaign, Anderson told NUFC TV: “I think it’s even more important than last year, this season. I need to really solidify a place within the team. I’m looking forward to the challenge.”
Anderson will of course be part of the “home-grown” quota for the Champions League, but there’s plenty of hope amongst Newcastle fans that the academy graduate gets more chances to prove his worth in what will prove to be a long, difficult season.
