Callum Wilson notched another two goals for Newcastle United tonight against the team he loves scoring past, West Ham, and Eddie Howe was pleased to see him take his chance.
Newcastle’s £20million striker has been relegated to the bench recently, having to watch Alexander Isak take all the plaudits and scoring the goals. It was a bit of a surprise tonight when the teams were announced and Callum Wilson was in the starting eleven ahead of Isak.
Wilson wasted no time in staking a claim for his place, however, opening the scoring for the Magpies after just six minutes. He then added a his second and Newcastle‘s third just 22 seconds into the second half after a great press by Jacob Murphy to dispossess Nayef Aguerd and then square the ball for Wilson to tap into an empty net.
Howe’s voice in his Sky Sports interview suggested he’d had some stern words
After the match, in his interview with Sky Sports, Howe was asked if he was glad to see Wilson taking his chance in the team, to which Howe responded: “Very much so but no doubt about his ability and his quality and what he brings. Two really good goals, yeah, delighted with him.”
Newcastle’s forwards are both in fine form which gives Howe a headache when it comes to team selection, but at the same time, given that we’re now two games into a three game week, it does ease the burden knowing that he has two excellent choices. If his first choice is struggling in a game, he has a great option on the bench.

Despite running out 5-1 winners, Eddie Howe was far from satisfied with the overall performance. Speaking with a hoarse voice, Howe said: “We weren’t at our very best but we were clinical today. We probably haven’t been like that for a while so it was great to see us score goals. The score line looked comfortable but I didn’t think it was. It was a tight game.”
Newcastle win 5-1 and Howe still isn’t happy
On the half hour mark during a break in play, Howe had his players huddled around in the technical area where he seemed to be giving the players the hair dryer treatment. It just shows that even when we’re winning, Eddie is still not happy unless it’s all perfect.
That kind of attitude is exactly what leads to a winning mentality. When you can still see what needs improving after such a comprehensive win. That’s why I back Eddie Howe to deliver us our first silverware in decades.
