Yoane Wissa’s debut for Newcastle United actually lasted longer than Eddie Howe first planned for.

At long last, Wissa made his Newcastle United debut against Burnley.

The former Brentford forward emerged from the bench in the 74th minute to replace Nick Woltemade, with the Magpies cruising against the Clarets at the time.

In rather typical Newcastle United fashion, they almost threw yet another lead away when Jacob Ramsey gave away a late penalty, which was duly dispatched by Zian Flemming.

Still, Newcastle saw the game out. It certainly wasn’t pretty, but three points are all that matters ahead of another busy week of action.

After a 96-day wait, Wissa’s debut for Newcastle lasted around 16 minutes. It wasn’t long enough to draw any definitive conclusions, but still longer than Howe initially planned.

Eddie Howe admits Yoane Wissa played for longer than planned for Newcastle United vs Burnley

The Newcastle United manager was speaking to reporters after the game.

Naturally, Howe was asked about Wissa’s display.

He admitted that he hadn’t necessarily planned for the DR Congo international to play for even that long, although the fact that Burnley went down to ten men forced Howe to change his mind.

Lucas Pires was shown a first-half red card on Tyneside for bringing down Anthony Elanga after a nice ball from Anthony Gordon.

“I probably played him longer than I wanted to today but purely for the fact we had an extra man and I thought the space on the pitch would give him more opportunity to showcase what he can do,” he told reporters after the game.

“He’s had minimal training with us, but he’s done a lot of work with the physios and the sport scientists. He’s in a position where he can enter the pitch.

“But we have to be careful with managing his minutes. Of course, his training time now he’s back involved with us will take a bit of a hit, so we’ve got to manage his recovery right.”

Still, despite the fact Newcastle had a man advantage, they still ended up making life very difficult for themselves.

There is a certain logic to what Howe is saying, however. The conditions looked favourable to give Wissa a run out at the time.

Why Yoane Wissa is the big winner from Newcastle United’s win over Burnley

Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon both played well in Newcastle’s 2-1 win over Burnley, along with Tino Livramento.

Other than that, there weren’t many big stories to have emerged. Newcastle played well in parts but still don’t inspire much in the way of total confidence.

However, the fact Wissa got more minutes than initially planned can only be a good thing for the club.

It is surely going to take a while for him to build up his fitness. The more action he gets, the quicker that will happen.
