Eddie Howe raves about Newcastle star Nick Pope, after he produced two moments of magic last night

Eddie Howe has reacted to the brilliance of goalkeeper Nick Pope after Newcastle United beat Southampton 1-0 in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final.

Speaking with Sky Sports after the match, the Magpies manager was full of praise for the 30-year-old shot-stopper.

“The two saves he’s made were big moments in the game,” Howe said, as shared by Football Daily.

“Adams’ 1v1 is a huge time in the game where, you know, the crowd are getting into the game – they began to get on top.

“And Nick [Pope] stood up and made a great save, and then he made one shortly after as well.

“He’s been outstanding for us this year. The defence has played very well the majority of the time in front of him, but whenever he is needed, he’s produced the goods for us.”

Howe raves about Pope

Following the result against Saints last night, Pope has now amassed ten clean sheets in a row.

This is a phenomenal stat for the Toon goalkeeper, especially when you consider the last goal he conceded took place on 6 November (although the World Cup may have something to do with this).

Having arrived at St James’ Park last summer in a deal worth £10m, the 30-year-old has since been rated as the side’s third-best player in the Premier League this term.

Without the England international, Newcastle would not be enjoying the level of success they have right now.

Consequently, going forward, he will continue to play a huge part in Howe’s plans.

Although the likes of Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimaraes will receive calls for being the best signing of the PIF era, Pope certainly has a case for the title.
