Eddie Howe now shares how he feels Liverpool’s red card affected the game

Newcastle United fell to another defeat to Liverpool despite being in a strong position for most of the game with Liverpool down to ten men.

Liverpool went down to ten men midway through the first-half while Newcastle were already one goal to the good when Virgil Van Dijk was shown a straight red for felling Alexander Isak.

Newcastle should have gone on to put the game to bed from there. The Magpies enjoyed the lion’s share of possession and created plenty of opportunities, but in what seems to be an age-old complaint with Newcastle, they failed to make the right decisions in the final third.

Howe said this result hurt as much as the Anfield defeat last year

Without picking out individual players, there were a few who simply weren’t good enough today and because of that Newcastle now find themselves with just one win in three in the Premier League.

Speaking to NUFC TV’s Andy Sixsmith after the game, Eddie Howe spoke about how this result hurts saying: “That’s as painful as the game at Anfield last season for me and us. We played really well today. The sending off almost harms us.”

Newcastle definitely seem to be one of those sides who don’t know how to play against ten men. It never looked like Newcastle had a one-man advantage and Liverpool were able to make the most of that.

Even at 1-1 it felt like a defeat as Newcastle should have been clear

Even at 1-1 it felt like a defeat after Darwin Nunez scored on 81 minutes, Nunez went on to put the game to bed in stoppage time. A sickening defeat.

Howe mentioned the defeat at Anfield last season where Newcastle lost the game in the eighth minute of five added on, and I agree, this one hurts just as much, if not more.

Last year we can blame the officials for adding on too much time, this year, there’s no excuse. Newcastle simply didn’t do what needed to be done when they were in the ascendency and that cost us the game.
