Newcastle United fans at St James’ Park witnessed another world-class goal from Miguel Almiron as he put the Geordies 1-0 up against Burnley yesterday.
Miguel Almiron had his best goal scoring season for Newcastle last campaign, and now has two goals in his last two Premier League games.
The £21million signing from Atlanta United took a long time to really get going at Newcastle but last season we finally saw what made the Atlanta fans fall in love with him, and it looks like he’s back on track for this season.
Miguel Almiron scored another worldie for Newcastle
After the referee waved away handball protest from Newcastle as Aaron Ramsey looked to have controlled the ball with his arm, Kieran Trippier went in with a superb tackle to dispossess Ramsey who was dawdling on the ball. The ball broke free for Almiron who picked it up on the edge of the area, took a couple of touches to take two on-rushing Burnley defenders out of the game then unleashed a fierce (of course, left-footed) effort into the far top corner giving James Trafford no chance.
That goal came against the run of play as it had looked like Burnley were the most likely to score in the opening few minutes, but as Eddie Howe said to Match of the Day: “Sometimes in difficult games you need a moment of quality, it came from Miggy who’s played really well the last few weeks, delighted for him.”
It’s a goal that we’ve seen Miggy score a few times now, but it never gets any less impressive.
Underestimate Almiron at your peril
Last summer I was convinced we needed to replace Almiron to truly move forward and he ended up having his best season ever at Newcastle.
This summer, despite is outstanding season, I was still thinking we needed to bring somebody in to replace him, and he’s once again going about proving me wrong.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned lately, it’s never underestimate Miguel Almiron.
