Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has questioned why referee Peter Bankes didn’t take a second look at the Leicester City penalty incident on the pitchside monitor.

The Foxes ran out 4-0 winners today at the King Power Stadium.

It was a rotten performance in the end from Newcastle, who really needed to build on last weekend’s win over Burnley.

Leicester had Jamie Vardy on the bench and other players missing, and had also been in Europa League action in midweek.

It was a real chance to get some more points on the board.

But it was easy for Leicester, although they did have some help getting the ball rolling.

Jamaal Lascelles was adjudged to have fouled James Maddison in the first-half, with Bankes blowing for a penalty.

The VAR backed his call, which was a real surprise. Sky pundits Alan Pardew and Graeme Souness both thought it wasn’t a penalty. And neither did Alan Shearer.

Howe has questioned why Bankes did not look at the incident again via the pitchside monitor.

He said: “Definitely. It’s what it’s there for. I don’t understand why referees are so reluctant. I think if he does, he reverses the decision.”

Eddie Howe is right – Leicester penalty decision vs Newcastle should have been looked at again

Eddie Howe is right. Referee Bankes should undoubtedly have looked at the penalty incident again.

The fact it wasn’t is quite worrying. It was a clear dive from Foxes midfielder Maddison.

Having said that, Newcastle were seriously poor after conceding that first goal.

It would have been nice to see the players using the injustice to raise their level. But it was as though the decision knocked the stuffing out of them.
