Don Goodman praises Miguel Almiron during Newcastle's defeat to Manchester City

Newcastle United were beaten today by Manchester City in the Premier League.

There was to be no bouncing back from defeat to Liverpool, with leaders City simply a cut above at St. James’ Park.

Ruben Dias, Joao Cancelo and Riyad Mahrez were the scorers for the visitors.

At 2-0, there was a very controversial incident when Ederson took out Ryan Fraser in the box.

The goalkeeper had come to gather the ball but Cancelo had taken matters into his own hands.

The Brazilian slid into Fraser, completely taking him out, but Martin Atkinson did not award a spot-kick and VAR backed the man in the middle.

Ultimately Newcastle were well short on the day though, and these types of games probably won’t define Newcastle’s season.

Positives were few and far between for Newcastle, but Don Goodman did muster some praise for Miguel Almiron in the first-half.

He said after seeing Almiron surged back to chase down Bernardo Silva in the first-half: “He gets through a shift doesn’t he? He’s all-action, all energy. Attacking and defending. That’s why he’s popular around these parts.”

Miguel Almiron needs to offer more for Newcastle

Newcastle undoubtedly need more from Almiron.

Yes, he works very hard, but the Paraguay international has left a lot to be desired this season.

He hasn’t scored or assisted yet, which for a £20 million player is highly disappointing.

He needs to improve in front of goal soon. Admittedly, a fixture like this was always going to be tough for him to do too much.

But Newcastle need their big players to step up.
