Anthony Gordon made his return to Goodison Park tonight and came off the bench during Newcastle United’s 4-1 win over Everton.

Newcastle condemned Everton to yet another Premier League defeat in a fiery affair at Goodison Park eventually coming out with a 4-1 win, but in truth the score line flattered the Magpies a bit.

Anthony Gordon came off the bench with around 10 minutes remaining in the game, by that point the game was sewn up and many of the Everton fans had already left the stadium, but there were enough still inside to give Gordon the welcome he likely expected.

The stadium was half-empty by the time Anthony Gordon came on

He stepped onto the pitch to a round of boos but, as the BT Sport commentary mentioned, it wasn’t unanimous with Ian Darke saying: “He is getting the treatment from a section of the Everton fans, not all of them.”

The icing on the cake tonight would have been an Anthony Gordon goal, but we’ll make do with the four we got. Two from Callum Wilson, one for Joelinton and another for Jacob Murphy after Alexander Isak took on pretty much the entire Everton team.

Champions League is so, so close now

Every touch Gordon got was greeted with jeers for the first five minutes he was on the pitch but it soon quietened down as the remaining Evertonians headed home before the full-time whistle.

There were plenty of celebrations on the pitch at full-time amongst the Newcastle players and the travelling fans who had another night to remember and saw two mind-blowing goals, plus another worldie that was disallowed for offside.

Newcastle are now eight points clear of fifth and the Champions League is looking very, very close. It’s probably already sewn up but until it’s mathematically nailed on, you’ll not get Eddie Howe to admit that it’s happening.
