Newcastle United are at the top of their game right now, but face a massive test against Arsenal on Sunday.
Mikel Arteta’s team head to St James’ Park with an outside chance of lifting the Premier League title, although Arsenal could start the day four points adrift of Manchester City.
As for Newcastle, it is another chance for Eddie Howe‘s side to strengthen their top four credentials. The Magpies could even end the season in third. That is something that is now in Newcastle’s hands after Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat to Brighton on Thursday night.
With both sides still having something to play for, it is set up to be an excellent game at St James’ Park – and it is a game that pundit Chris Sutton thinks the home side will win.
Chris Sutton predicts Newcastle to beat Arsenal
As part of his predictions for BBC Sport, Sutton has tipped Newcastle to beat Arsenal 2-1 on Sunday.

“I was at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday and Arsenal were very good – but there is an argument that Chelsea made them look very good,” he wrote.
“I thought Gunners defender Jakub Kiwior had a really good game against the Blues, but stopping an in-form Newcastle side is a much bigger ask.
“The way the Magpies take the game to teams is great to watch and there is no way whatsoever this one will end goalless again, like it did when they met in January.
“Arsenal need to keep winning to keep the pressure up on Manchester City, and a draw is not enough for them. Sadly for them, I can see Newcastle nicking this and continuing their impressive form.”
Incredibly difficult game for Eddie Howe’s side
The reverse fixture was a 0-0 draw at the start of 2023, with Newcastle frustrating Arsenal at the Emirates.
Sutton is expecting a more open game this weekend, and one that will provide goals. That will hopefully be the case, but only if they are scored by the boys in black and white.
Newcastle have been brilliant all season, while they have been exceptional at home ever since Howe became manager. The only teams that have beaten the Magpies at St James’ Park in the league since he took over have been Manchester City and Liverpool.
Arsenal need to join that list this weekend, otherwise they can kiss goodbye to the Premier League title. That is why the Gunners are so dangerous. This is a very different team to the one we beat 2-0 at SJP at the backend of last season.
Howe’s men will need to be at their absolute best to get a win, and that is exactly what Sutton is anticipating. It is a real testament to how good the Magpies have been that the pundit has put his neck on the line and said they will win, rather than going for the safe bet and predicting a draw.
