Newcastle United managed to come away with three points against Brentford tonight via a Callum Wilson penalty but Chris Sutton wasn’t convinced it should have been given.

Callum Wilson was robbed of a perfectly good goal for Newcastle on 55 minutes but he didn’t have to wait much longer to right the wrong that befell him via VAR.

On around 60 minutes Brentford ‘keeper Mark Flekken needlessly clattered into Anthony Gordon right on the byline and it didn’t take long for referee Craig Pawson to point to the spot.

Chris Sutton certainly felt that Anthony Gordon bought the penalty

Replays showed a definite contact between Flekken and Gordon, but BBC pundit Chris Sutton wasn’t convinced there was enough in it for a penalty to be awarded and made his feelings known on X with a cheeky GIF showing a woman belly-flopping into the sea.

Maybe it was just my black and white tinted specs, but it looked like a penalty to me. Or maybe I just saw it that way after the travesty of a decision that saw Callum Wilson’s earlier goal chalked off.

Regardless of whether or not Gordon dived, there was no question marks over the way Callum Wilson put away the penalty.

Newcastle now head to Milan with confidence

Wilson is now on three goals this season and is stating his case brilliantly for being Newcastle’s first-choice striker.

The win now eases the pressure off the team going into Tuesday’s Champions League opener against AC Milan who lost the Milan derby today 5-1.

It feels like Tuesday is the perfect time to play them and with Sandro Tonali on the bench today, it suggests he’ll be fit enough to at least play some part in his return to home.
