Newcastle United fans welcomed back one player to the starting XI in their 2-0 win against Chelsea on Sunday, but their opponents were less than pleased.
There was so much riding on the game, especially after Aston Villa’s win against Bournemouth on Saturday evening. Thankfully, Sandro Tonali’s early goal, coupled with Bruno Guimaraes’ late strike, was enough to secure the three points and move them up to third in the Premier League table.
Eddie Howe called for a good atmosphere at St James’ Park in his pre-match press conference and the Newcastle United fans gave him exactly that.
St James’ Park was rocking from kick-off, which would only have helped motivate the Newcastle players on the pitch even more.
Nicholas Jackson was shown a red card in the first half for a flailing arm on returning defender Sven Botman. The Blues seemed to perform better with 10 men, much to the dismay of the Newcastle fans in attendance.
The Magpies were able to hold on, but Chelsea fans were furious at one player for his actions during the game.

Chelsea fans berate Anthony Gordon after Newcastle United defeat
Winger Anthony Gordon returned to Newcastle’s starting XI for the first time since he was shown a straight red card against Brighton in the FA Cup.
The 24-year-old looked a constant nuisance to Chelsea’s back line, making darting runs and keeping the intensity high up the pitch.
While Newcastle fans will be pleased with how he played, Chelsea fans were fuming at the amount of time Gordon spent on the floor. One particular moment saw Gordon go down in the box just before Tonali’s goal, only to spring up just before the cross came in.
“Gordon has been a disgrace this game. Any chance of him staying on his feet near a Chelsea player?” said one Chelsea fan on X.
“Anthony Gordon absolutely having the ref on toast. He’s incredible at making something look like a free kick by initiating contact. A skill in itself.” said another furious supporter.
This Chelsea fan commented: “Anthony Gordon miraculously managing to stay on his feet whilst being substituted.”
“Just think how good Anthony Gordon would be if he stopped diving and getting players booked. After all he missed the league cup final because he was sent off. Karma.” said a fifth Chelsea fan.
Another Chelsea fan added: “Nah, Anthony Gordon needs to hit the gym fr. He’s been falling too much.”
Finally, this Chelsea fan said: “Does Anthony Gordon normally spend this much time on the ground?”

While Chelsea fans were far from pleased with Gordon’s efforts against them, Newcastle fans will be happy to see him back in the starting XI and causing trouble for the opposition.
Newcastle players believed a win against Chelsea would guarantee Champions League, they have moved within touching distance of doing that thanks to Sunday’s important win.

Kieran Trippier and Joe Willock missed the Newcastle win. Howe had to make tactical adjustments to his team which worked a treat.
The boss reverted to Newcastle’s traditional 4-3-3 midway through the second half to calm things down and ensure they bagged the three points and move further up the Premier League table.
