Callum Wilson was surprised by Aston Villa’s turnaround in form on Saturday

Aston Villa’s 3-0 win over Newcastle United on Saturday still looms large in the memory and now Callum Wilson has spoken about it on his podcast.

Callum Wilson was described as a ‘slapped puppy’ by his Footballer’s Football Podcast co-host Michail Antonio this week after Newcastle’s defeat at the weekend, but the £20million man found the strength to give credit to Unai Emery‘s side.

“I like to give credit when it’s due, said Wilson. “What I will say is Villa played well, they played very well. You have to give credit to them. Yes, we have to focus on ourselves. We didn’t turn up really, but they played good football.

Wilson said Newcastle knew what to expect but let it happen anyway

“I was surprised because the turnaround from when we did play them earlier in the season, it was worlds apart and I’d say we probably fell into the trap of knowing what we were going to expect but letting it happen, in terms of tactics and what they were going to do and things like that and losing the second balls and ground duels.

“And if that happens in the Premier League, we get exposed and ultimately, it’s a bad day at the office. It’s gone. They were good. We weren’t on the day, but we got to fight another day. We lost the battle but we are still in with a chance of winning the war.”

It was a game where Newcastle were second best across the park, a rare off-day. Hopefully that’s all it was and the Magpies will bounce back on Sunday with a home win over Tottenham. It will be the first game at St James’ Park for a while so the crowd should be absolutely buzzing.

Newcastle must put the Villa defeat behind them and move on quickly

There were definitely a lot of lessons to be learned from the defeat at Villa, but as long as they do learn from it and move on quickly it’ll soon be put behind us and the feel-good factor will return.

It took such a toll on Callum Wilson that he said early on in the Podcast that he didn’t watch any other football over the weekend.

Michail Antonio even felt sorry for him and felt like he couldn’t dish out his usual banter saying: “Like I don’t know if I like you like this. I can deal with it and give it back but he just seems like a slapped puppy.”

It sounds like it could be a goalscoring weekend for Wilson as he aims to put the Villa game in his rearview mirror.
