Bruno Guimaraes says a ‘clear’ mistake was made during Newcastle’s defeat to Chelsea

Bruno Guimaraes was involved in a major incident early on in Newcastle United’s 2-1 defeat to Chelsea.

The Magpies were once again below par at Stamford Bridge and can have no complaints about the result. Newcastle United were second best, with Cole Palmer proving to be the star of the show.

However, there could have been a different outcome had a decision gone Newcastle’s way when the score was 0-0.

Eddie Howe‘s side almost broke through the Chelsea defence, with Bruno Guimaraes looking to burst into the box. However, he was clearly tripped by Levi Colwill. The England international even admitted he was guilty, quickly telling referee Simon Hooper that the incident was outside the box rather than inside.

However, Hooper ignored Colwill and the Newcastle protests by waving play on. A VAR review then showed that the incident was outside the box, and therefore no penalty was awarded. There was also no red card, as it was determined not to be denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.

While a red card might have been harsh, it was staggering to see Newcastle not get a free kick in a perfect position.

The decision angered Bruno, who spoke to the club’s official website about the incident after the game.

The Newcastle United captain was asked if he thought he was denied a goalscoring opportunity.

“Of course, of course,” he said.

“It is a clear foul. In my point of view, they should at least check because it was a one-v-one chance and maybe a red card. The same player got another yellow card so if he had got a yellow card he would be sent off.

“They should check but we should avoid speaking about referees.”

Bruno has made a slight error in his assessment, as Colwill was not booked at all during Newcastle’s 2-1 loss to Chelsea.

Incorrect decision did not define Newcastle’s performance

It was a terrible decision by Hooper. You could argue that it should even have been a red card, as Bruno would have been through on goal and had a chance to score had he not been taken out.

That is up for debate, but the fact that not even a free kick was given was staggering.

Unfortunately, VAR could not get involved once it was determined not to be a red card. They could have given a penalty had the incident been inside the box, but it was just on the wrong side of the line.

It was infuriating, but it was an incident that did not define the game. Newcastle were not good enough against Chelsea, as they made it five Premier League games without a win.

The Magpies are now 12th in the table, with Eddie Howe’s side lacking the intensity they once had.
