There was a moment of panic yesterday as Bruno Guimaraes headed down the tunnel early as Newcastle United warmed up ahead of the clash with Brentford.
Geordie hearts were breaking as they watched Newcastle‘s £40million Brazilian hobble off before kick-off at Brentford, only for a wave of relief to wash over the travelling support when he strode out onto the battlefield as kick-off approached.
Speaking after the game, Bruno clarified the situation (via The Chronicle): “In the warm-up, I twisted my ankle so now I get some time to rest.
Bruno played through the pain against Brentford
“I need to get some rest and see at the end of the season we can do but I am not happy with my ankle.”
When asked if he was at risk of missing the game he said: “I got some pills but the first half was very tough for me. I think I improved my game and helped my teammates to get the result.”

He then confirmed that he’ll continue playing and will be in the squad when the Magpies travel to Aston Villa next week: “I will be OK of course.”
Was Ted Lasso’s Dani Rojas based on Bruno Guimaraes?
Bruno strikes me of the kind of player who’d play with a broken leg if he was allowed. To quote the great Richmond FC man, Dani Rojas: “Football is life” and although it’s unlikely that Ted Lasso character Rojas was based on Bruno, the similarities between them are easy to see.
It’s very rare that you don’t see Bruno smiling, and despite playing through pain yesterday he was still enjoying himself. Although, not so much in the first half when things weren’t going Newcastle’s way. Bruno does wear his heart on his sleeve and losing clearly hurts for him. Thankfully we’ve not seen that side of him very much since he arrived as we tend to win when he’s on the pitch.
My big fear is that he plays through this injury until the end of the season only to then find out that it has caused more damage. I’m sure that he’s being monitored closely by the club’s medical team, but it’s still a worry.
