Bruno Guimaraes makes a big claim about Newcastle United and Sunderland at exactly the wrong time

Bruno Guimaraes has shared some interesting insight into what the Newcastle United players think about the Sunderland team.

Guimaraes was at least one of the better Newcastle United players in the 1-0 defeat at the Stadium of Light but that really isn’t saying all too much.

Indeed, Sunderland beat Newcastle yet again thanks to a Nick Woltemade own goal on Wearside.

It was relatively unlucky from the German, who was just trying to help out. What was more concerning was his performance at the other end of the pitch, in all honesty.

While it’s not as if Newcastle were absolutely blown away, the Black Cats did outmuscle them and, despite their status as a newly promoted team, they are not short on quality themselves.

Still, Guimaraes believes Newcastle are still the better team.

Bruno Guimaraes says Newcastle United have a better team than Sunderland

The Brazilian was speaking to reporters in the mixed zone after the defeat.

According to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie on social media platform X, the midfielder was visibly angry.

It’s not hard to imagine why, of course. Newcastle were dreadful against Sunderland, even if it wasn’t really a game full of chances.

Still, at precisely the wrong time, Guimaraes claimed Newcastle believe they are a better team.

“We know we have a better team than them but we didn’t play like the better team,” he said.

How has the loss to Sunderland made you feel about Eddie Howe as Newcastle United manager?

“It was a mess. The consistency isn’t there, the mentality isn’t there. We didn’t compete. The fans expect and deserve better.”

Granted, this is someone speaking in their second language and that understanding must be applied, but they do sound like hollow words.

It is simply not enough to think you’re the better team. You have to show it. Newcastle did not do that, as Guimaraes explained.

Sunderland’s win over Newcastle United ends a record that has stood for 127 years

Never before in 127 years of the Tyne-Wear derby had Newcastle lost four consecutive league games on Wearside.

Now, they have.

Sunderland’s recent win also drew them level with Newcastle in the all-time standings for victories in this fixture with 54.

Newcastle are now in historically bad form in their biggest game for supporters. That is embarrassing.

The PIF era at Newcastle might have so far brought unprecedented success to the club, but even a mega-money takeover cannot reverse their fortunes in the Tyne-Wear derby, last year’s FA Cup victory aside.

Newcastle might think they are a better team than Sunderland. Recent evidence in the derby would suggest they aren’t, as painful as that is to say.
