Newcastle United may not be back to winning ways but their performance against Liverpool was brilliant.
Indeed, Newcastle may leave St James’ Park with only a point following a 3-3 draw but that does not tell the whole story.
After a recent funk in front of goal, Eddie Howe’s side scored three against the Premier League leaders on a night where they really could have won.
The performance was even better than the result. Howe’s side pressed all over the park and went toe-to-toe with a Reds team who have largely been perfect this season, especially when making light work of Real Madrid and Manchester City in consecutive games.
While it wasn’t a win, it was a much-needed response from Newcastle. They have laboured since the return from the international break but rolled back the years somewhat on Wednesday night, looking a lot like the team who qualified for the Champions League during the glorious 2022/23 campaign.
The visitors of course played a big part in what was another brilliant instalment of this iconic Premier League fixture.
It all got going through an absolute thunderbolt from Alexander Isak, who proved brilliant all night. He later teed up Anthony Gordon for the second, too.

Alexander Isak was “extra special” against Liverpool
Speaking after his excellent opener, BBC Sport pundit Pat Nevin said of the striker to Radio Five Live: “Alexander Isak has been extra special in this game. Every time he has got the ball, he has went deep with it.
“He has created two or three very good chances for his team-mates, but it was only time someone gave him a chance.
“But that is not even a chance. He had a lot to do. You are thinking can he do it. But there is no one else you want to be on the ball in that Newcastle team in that situation.”
Alexander Isak came good on his promise to Newcastle fans
Isak has struggled since the international break, albeit he was forced off at Crystal Palace due to injury.
Still, he showed little sign of rust on Wednesday and looked at his very best once again. Having promised to give the fans something back after the excellent Wor Flags display before the West Ham game, the striker certainly came good on that.
There can be little doubting Isak’s quality, even in a reasonably slow season. More performances like that and the goals will pour in.
