BBC pundit absolutely blown away by ‘world class’ moment from Newcastle star vs Tottenham

Newcastle United ended a difficult week in stunning fashion.

While it was not a particularly pretty watch, Newcastle overcame Tottenham in the Premier League to ensure they go into the first international break of the season in unbeaten fashion.

Only days after Alan Shearer slammed a very underwhelming transfer window, it felt like a hugely important three points.

Eddie Howe’s side are yet to show anything like their best but, frankly, that’s not overly important right now. They’re showing character and have yet to taste defeat despite a relatively painful summer.

Crucial to the victory was Harvey Barnes. The winger made his first start of the season and scored a brilliant goal on the break in the first-half.

Such was the quality of the strike, BBC Sport pundit Pat Nevin was left seriously impressed.

Reflecting on the forward’s goal after Barnes did brilliantly to control a difficult-looking side-footed strike, Nevin was frankly blown away.

“That finish is astonishing,” he told BBC Radio Five Live at 14:09 BST on 01/09/2024.

“He has just nailed it into the far corner. I knew it wouldn’t be 0-0.

“It’s bounced and skidded off the surface but it’s high. The technique Barnes used is world class.”

Having also impressed when providing the cross from which Anthony Gordon scored against Bournemouth last week, Barnes is making a case to start regularly now.

He was said to have been frustrated not to have been given the nod against Southampton in the season opener after a good pre-season and appears to be chomping at the bit to make an impact.

After his first season at the club was ruined by a frankly freakish injury the club’s medical staff had not seen in football before, Barnes looks to be making up for lost time.

Additions to the forward line during the transfer window would of course have been nice but Barnes looks ready to make a much more telling impact this time around.

Perhaps he really could be like a new signing…
