Alan Shearer’s instant verdict as Newcastle draw 2-2 with Leeds

Newcastle United were only able to win a point from their game against Leeds United, but Toon legend Alan Shearer believes it is a good result.

It was an up and down game for Eddie Howe’s side. A slow start saw us fall behind to Luke Ayling’s seventh minute strike, and then Leeds had the chance to go 2-0 up.

Joelinton gave away a penalty that Patrick Bamford stepped up to take, but he was denied by Nick Pope. Newcastle then went up the other end and won a penalty of their own. Luckily Callum Wilson did not make the same mistake that Bamford did.

The penalty drama then continued in the second half, with Wilson getting another chance to score from the spot. He took it, despite Joel Robles’ best attempts to put him off.

It looked like Newcastle were going to win on the road, but a Rasmus Kristensen strike was deflected into the back of the net by Kieran Trippier, handing Leeds a vital point.

It was a tough afternoon for Howe’s men, but Shearer has offered them some words of encouragement after the full time whistle.

After the game, The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards took to Twitter to provide his analysis. He stated that it should prove to be a decent point for the Magpies.

The message prompted a reply from Shearer, who wrote: “Agreed. If you can’t win, don’t get beaten.”

Time will tell how good a point this is for Newcastle

A win would have put Newcastle on the brink of qualifying for the Champions League, but a draw gives Manchester United and Liverpool a chance to close the gap.

The race for the top four is going to go right to the wire, but it is still in Newcastle’s hands. We have got our game in hand on Thursday night, and the picture will be a lot clearer after the match with Brighton.

It was not a brilliant performance from Howe’s side at Elland Road. In that respect, it has to be considered a valuable point. We will find out how valuable in the next two weeks when the 2022/23 Premier League season draws to a close.
