Alan Shearer was really impressed with what one of Newcastle United’s star players did against Chelsea last night in what was otherwise a disappointing defeat.

Newcastle struggled all night to deal with the pace of Chelsea’a attack and they were duly punished as they conceded three poor goals, but there was still some positives to take from their performance.

After Newcastle’s first goal, Shearer posted on X as he was really impressed with Alexander Isak’s first touch and then the finish to stick it into the bottom corner from distance.

Isak one of Newcastle’s few positives vs Chelsea

It was a disappointing night on the whole for Newcastle who now find themselves in a tricky position in the Premier League seven points away from Man United in sixth place.

Eddie Howe had changed his tactics from the previous win against Wolves in which Newcastle had done very well in transition and were able to punish their opposition with their pace up front on the counter.

Against Chelsea, however, they looked to play more on the front foot further up the pitch and suffered a taste of their own medicine as the Blues punished them by waiting on Newcastle to make a mistake in their own half.

The one shining light up front was Isak’s quality on the ball as he was able to drag Newcastle back into the game in the first half with a brilliant finish into the bottom corner.

On social media, Shearer posted: “

“Ah what a touch and a better finish. Isaaakkkkk”

Newcastle heading towards a disappointing finish

Newcastle have suffered an unbelievable amount of injuries this season and against Chelsea things only got worse as Anthony Gordon and Dan Burn both exited the pitch with knocks.

That has obviously had a huge impact in the results on the pitch, but regardless of that the pressure is really on Howe now as the European spots are drifting further away from them with now just nine games left to play in the league.

The Magpies do still have the FA Cup quarter final to motivate themselves for, but with a very difficult tie away to Manchester City it’s fair to say that there’s not a load of optimism on Tyneside at the minute.
