Alan Shearer was not impressed with what 24-year-old Newcastle player did vs Man City during FA Cup exit

Newcastle United crashed out of the FA Cup to Manchester City on Saturday night, losing 2-0 as their trophy dreams came to an end for another year.

Two deflected goals in the first half gave Manchester City the win at the Etihad, as they advanced to the semi finals of the FA Cup as they look to defend their trophy.

As for Newcastle, it was a miserable night in the North West. They conceded two really unfortunate goals, but did not do enough to deserve anything from the game.

Eddie Howe‘s side rarely threatened Man City, although they did create one golden chance in the first half. Jacob Murphy’s cross was headed down by Dan Burn, who put it in a brilliant area for Alexander Isak.

The 24-year-old directed an effort towards goal, but it was expertly saved by Stefan Ortega.

Had that gone in, it would have been 2-1, and suddenly Newcastle would have had a route back into the game. But Isak squandered the chance, much to the disappointment of Toon legend Alan Shearer.

Alan Shearer thinks Alexander Isak should have done better against Man City

Alan Shearer spoke about Alexander Isak’s first half miss during BBC Match Of The Day’s coverage of Manchester City vs Newcastle United.

“They work it well,” he said.

“Dan Burn wins a header. It’s a very good save, but a striker of his quality…you would expect that to be put away.

“They work it well. Good ball in, good header back, free chance. I know it’s difficult to keep it down – the ball is rising.

“I would have thought with the season he’s having in front of goal, I’d expect that to be in the back of the net.”

It was the only decent chance Newcastle created

Given how good Isak has been this season, it is understandable why Shearer thinks he should have done better with his chance in the first half. After all, the most expensive signing in Newcastle’s history is their top scorer right now, boasting 16 goals in all competitions.

But he was unable to add to his tally at the Etihad, despite getting a glorious chance to do just that.

Personally, I think it was just a good save, although the opinion of Newcastle’s all-time leading scorer is probably more valid than mine…

The most concerning thing is that it was the only proper chance we created against Man City. Not many Toon fans expected Howe’s side to win, but the manner of the defeat was massively disappointing and rather concerning.
