Newcastle United were absolutely ‘battered’ by Liverpool on New Year’s Day according to Toon legend Alan Shearer.
The Magpies fell to a third consecutive Premier League defeat on Monday night, as Jurgen Klopp’s league leaders continued their charge towards the title.
As for Newcastle, their blip continued. Eddie Howe‘s side were nowhere near good enough at Anfield, conceding cheap goals and relying heavily on Martin Dubravka in between the sticks.
But, as is always the case when Newcastle play against Liverpool, the game was not without incident.
The Reds received two dubious penalties, the second of which came from a blatant dive by Diogo Jota. It was disgraceful, and allowed Liverpool to kill the game off.
Newcastle were also denied a penalty of their own when the game was 1-1. Sean Longstaff was wiped out in the box by Wataru Endo, but Anthony Taylor opted against pointing to the spot. It seemed harsh when you consider the two penalties that Liverpool got.

Alan Shearer delivers his verdict on Newcastle and Diogo Jota
The decisions were frustrating from a Newcastle perspective, but so was the performance as a whole. That is the view of Alan Shearer who responded to a Liverpool fan on X who was very happy to admit that Jota should have been booked for diving.
Shearer replied: “Yep. You battered Newcastle and should have scored more goals but clear dive for that pen.”
Newcastle were not good enough against Liverpool
Shearer sums it up perfectly with his tweet. Yes, it was clear that Jota conned the referee with his dive, but it should not take away from the fact that Newcastle were second best.
Liverpool created and wasted so many chances, with Martin Dubravka equal to almost everything they threw at him. While he has struggled a lot since coming back into the Newcastle starting XI, he certainly did not deserve to concede four goals at Anfield given how well he played.
The decisions that went against us were really difficult to take, but the fact is that Liverpool were largely dominant. They should have scored more, and Jota did not need to resort to cheating when he had an open goal in front of him.
For Newcastle, this difficult patch of form continues, and it is a run that simply must come to an end on Saturday when we arrive at the Stadium Of Light to face Sunderland in the FA Cup.
