Newcastle United lost only their second home game of the season today as Arsenal came away with a 0-2 victory at St James’ Park and Alan Shearer was surprisingly calm.

Alan Shearer usually lets his passion run free on Twitter after a Newcastle game, whether that be celebrating a win or getting stuck into the team after poor performance, however today, the Premier League‘s all-time leading goal-scorer was quite magnanimous in defeat.

At full-time Shearer took to Twitter to give his verdict and was not at all harsh on Newcastle but full of praise for Arsenal, saying: “Well done Arsenal. Best team won on the day. Newcastle didn’t take their chances when they had them, Arsenal did. Solid away performance from them.”

Newcastle lost this one based more on luck than skill

Really, there’s not much more he could have said. Newcastle simply didn’t take their chances today, it wasn’t at all for a lack of trying, it was just one of those games where nothing went our way.

The Magpies hit the post twice, Aaron Ramsdale made a couple of brilliant saves, but at the centre of it all, Newcastle were just wasteful in possession. Bruno Guimaraes had a rare off day. He was caught in possession several times, played a few poor passes and hit some really low-quality shots on goal.

Newcastle proved that they’re not far behind Arsenal in terms of quality

Arsenal meanwhile could count themselves unlucky that it was only 0-2 as Nick Pope matched Aaron Ramsdale with some fantastic saves of his own.

Overall Newcastle had more possession, a barrage of corners but were lacking the luck that Arsenal had. Nothing summed up their luck more than their goals, especially the second which bounced in off Fabian Schar’s out-stretched foot.

At the end of the day, we put up a good fight and matched Arsenal all over the pitch proving that there’s not much between the two sides.
