Alan Shearer perfectly encapsulated the feeling among fans with his post on X at full time after Newcastle United scraped a 1-0 win over Brentford.

It was only a 1-0 win with Newcastle‘s goal coming from the penalty spot after Callum Wilson had just had a perfectly good goal ruled out by VAR.

It took a while for Newcastle to get into the game if we’re being honest. After the usual fast start which resulted in zero chances created, Brentford grew into the game and actually looked most likely to get the breakthrough.

Newcastle scrapped for their win over Brentford

The second half was a completely different story, however with Newcastle dominant for pretty much the entirety of the latter half.

Despite their dominance, though, Newcastle just couldn’t seem to land the killer blow. On 55 minutes Newcastle did have the ball in the net but VAR ruled that Callum Wilson had fouled the goalkeeper in the process.

Soon after Newcastle got awarded a penalty which Callum Wilson smashed home and that seemed to inject a bit more life into the team, but still there never seemed to be any real threat on Mark Flekken’s goal.

Luckily one goal was all it needed and Alan Shearer absolutely nailed the feeling amongst the fans when he posted on X: “A big result is more important than a big performance. Huge 3 points. #NEWBRE

A superb tweet from the big man, but had Alan Shearer been in the VAR room, Newcastle may still have come away with the 1-0 win but it would have been through Wilson’s chalked off goal and not the penalty.

Shearer didn’t agree with the decisions tonight against Brentford

Shearer called the decision against Wilson ‘weak’ but then a few minutes later posted: “For what it’s worth I didn’t think that was a pen either. #NEWBRE

Thankfully the referee and VAR disagreed and the penalty stood, although it would have felt more earned had it been a goal from open play rather than a contentious penalty.

But as Shearer said, the win is more important than the performance. Newcastle are once again showing that they can win ugly.
