Newcastle United’s under-23 squad are in Checkatrade Trophy action tonight, playing away at Notts County.

With Newcastle in the bottom three, they could do with some inspiration from somewhere.

Here are three players who will hoping to impress Rafa Benitez in tonight’s clash at Meadow Lane.

Sterry is on the verge of the first-team but just needs to push himself ahead of the other full-backs in Benitez’s reckoning.

The 22-year-old right-back played against Nottingham Forest in the EFL Cup this season and featured in the last Checkatrade Trophy clash as well.

Having previously spent time on loan with Coventry City and Crewe Alexandra, is it time Sterry made the step up?

Longstaff is a very talented midfielder and Newcastle need to sort out his future soon.

The 20-year-old had his first taste of senior football in the EFL Cup earlier this season and will be eager to get more action.

He operates in the number 10 role and his creativity in midfield could tempt Benitez into calling him up.

Elias Sorensen

Sorensen netted in the last Checkatrade Trophy game against Doncaster Rovers and recently hit a hat-trick.

With Newcastle struggling for goals this season, the Denmark youth international cannot be too far away from a first-team call-up.

The 19-year-old is a highly-rated striker and if he nets against Notts County, he’ll surely catch Benitez’s eye.
